Volunteer With Us
We are a community of volunteers committed to the prevention of cruelty to animals and to reducing the number of unwanted, diseased, stray, or un-adoptable animals euthanized in our county.
We have many volunteer opportunities where you can make a difference in the lives of animals:
- Foster a Dog or Cat
- Cat Care
- Animal Transport
- Petsmart Meet and Greet Dog Fairs
- One-Time Volunteer Opportunities
If you are interested in volunteering with us, please fill out our on-line Volunteer Application. Please note: You must be 18 years old to volunteer with us!
Foster a Dog or Cat
We are always in need of foster homes. Being a foster parent to a dog or cat is a great way to become involved with our organization and save a life. The foster program is one of our most important. Animals in a shelter environment are often stressed and don’t show their best attributes, so are often overlooked. Potential adopters love the fact that they can obtain more detailed information about a dog or cat’s temperament and training from the foster parents. Our fostered animals get adopted more quickly because of the TLC given to them by their foster families.
If you have considered fostering a dog or cat, just think of the life you could be saving! We match animals to their foster families as best we can. Vetting and temperament assessment are done prior to placement. We can provide crates for your use, but not outdoor kennels or doghouses. We can help with food from our supply of donated dog food. Leashes, collars, and ID tags will also be provided.
While we would love for every foster dog to be a house pet, we realize this is not always possible. If you have a dog who gets along well with other dogs and is kept in an outdoor kennel, won’t you consider boarding a companion? Cats being fostered must be kept indoor only at all times.
The animals that are moved into foster homes come from varied backgrounds. While we do our best to place healthy animals into foster homes, we can never guarantee that animals will not have underlying health problems that would develop after going into a foster home. Animals will have at a minimum a first vaccine and be tested for diseases such as feline leukemia, feline AIDS which would be a potential threat to resident animals.
Please keep in mind that during the time you agree to foster an animal, they will be listed for adoption on our website, and they may be adopted or transferred into rescue during that time. Therefore, you may have your foster in your care for a few days or several months.
Requirements for becoming a foster home:
- Foster families must sign a legally-binding Foster Home Agreement and Hold Harmless Agreement before the animal leaves our care into the foster home.
- All other family pets residing in the foster home must be spay/neutered and up-to-date on vaccinations for their protection.
- Foster families must agree to a brief home visit. (Note: The visit is NOT to evaluate if your home is spic n’ span, but rather to evaluate if it is a safe environment for the foster animal.)
Please e-mail us if you are interested in fostering dog or cat for us. Also feel free to spread the word to your responsible and animal-loving friends and family.
To apply to become part of our foster network (short or long-term commitments available) fill out our on-line Foster Home Application.
Please consider helping our homeless cats get ready for their forever home.
PETSMART ADOPTION CENTER CAGE CLEANERS:
Cleaning our six cages at the Lynchburg PetSmart Adoption Center takes about 1 to 1-1/2 hours. You may arrive at PetSmart any time after 7 a.m., and the cages need to be cleaned before the opening of the store at 9:00 or 10:00.
The cages at the Lynchburg PetSmart Adoption Center must be cleaned every morning — if we don’t have volunteers to clean the cages, we can’t have cats at the Adoption Center. Keep in mind that this is not the place for anyone who will be bothered by litter box smells or who has an allergy to cats.
Are you a person who love cats, and really serious about helping homeless animals?
PETSMART ADOPTION CENTER SUBSTITUE CAGE CLEANERS:We also need cleaners to fill in when our cleaning volunteers are not available to clean on their scheduled day… especially holidays, breaks and summers. (See description above for details.)
PETSMART ADOPTION CENTER-ADOPTION COUNSELORS:
We are scheduling evening time slots from 5-7pm and 7-9pm and all day Saturday/Sunday in two hour increments. These are peak adoption times and it helps to “show” our cats when we have volunteers in the center to answer questions. This requires a regularly scheduled day/time commitment. Responsibilities include tidying cages, changing water bowls, screening potential adopters, and helping adopters complete adoption paperwork.
FELINE FACILITY CARE ASSISTANTS:
As a feline care assistant at our private facility, you will have the opportunity to work directly with many of the cats/kittens in our care. The cats at this facility are being readied for adoption. Volunteers assist with feeding, watering, cleaning cages as well as our two colony rooms and working to socialize the cats/kittens. This position requires a regularly scheduled day/time commitment.
We often need assistance getting cats to vet appointments in order to get them ready for adoption. We have a regularly scheduled clinic day at the spay/neuter clinic. If you are available Tuesday and Wednesday mornings this may be a volunteer opportunity for you. This requires approximately an hour time commitment between 7:30 and 8:30am. We also periodically have appointments scheduled at animal hospitals around the area. If you can assist with tranportation, this is a great way to help the cats on their way to their forever homes.
E-mail firstname.lastname@example.org if you can help!
Local Animal Transport
We also need volunteers to drive animals to and from foster homes and/or veterinarians on an as-needed basis. You will be placed on a list of contacts with your date/times available. When we need a dog or cat transported to and from a vet or foster home, someone will contact you either by e-mail or telephone asking if you are available. You can take that assignment or not, depending on your availability.
HSCC is not funded by any govermental agency. All our funds come from adoption/transfer fees, donations, and fundraising events. If you are interested in helping us raise the funds we need to continue our work of saving the lives of animals, please fill out a volunteer application so we can make sure you receive e-mails about how to volunteer at upcoming events.
PetsMart Adoption Center Staff
Cats: If you like cats and enjoy talking to people, please consider staffing the PetSmart cat adoption center! We need volunteers to spend two hours a week assisting potential adopters as well as grooming and socializing the cats and tidying up the adoption center. Please e-mail email@example.com for more informtion on the days/times available to staff the adoption center.
Dogs: We also need volunteers to assist on the dates we bring dogs for adoption to the Lynchburg PetsMart. You will be sent an e-mail as the dog adoption events are scheduled. If you are available, sign up to be at the event. You will be trained ‘on-the-job’ by the HSCC leader in charge of the event. Usually volunteers will be holding the leashes of dogs, walking them for potty breaks, cleaning up accidents, supervising the puppy pen, answering questions for potential adopters, and learning how to screen adopters and complete adoption paperwork.
One-Time Volunteer Opportunities
Do you want to help us but can’t make a long-term commitment? We have one-time volunteer opportunities where you can make a difference in the lives of these animals for only a couple of hours of your time! To be placed on our “one-time volunteer list” please fill out our on-line Volunteer Application form. We will then contact you via e-mail when an opportunity arises. You can then decide if you can help or not!
