Adopt-a-Thon -- Saturday September 17th, 2005

PetSmart partnered with more than 2,700 humane organizations (including our) to host the Annual Adoption Weekend from Friday, September 16 to Sunday, September 18. It was a great three-day rendezvous with the cats and dogs! The weather couldn't have been more beautiful with the sun shining brightly on us all. We had 14 volunteers (most from Liberty University) to help out. Three foster parents joined us to help show off our dogs and cats. A few very experienced friends came to mentor us along. Thank you to Kathleen Fort for getting our volunteers and kicking us off for the weekend. A very special thanks to Barbe Shackelford, Shirley Butterfield, Jeff Setzer, and Sharon Pfister for their unselfish dedication to help us out! The HSCC adopted out 4 dogs and 6 cats... Not to mention the folks who stopped by and then went to the Animal Control Facility to adopt about 4 more dogs.

The Day in the Park was a success! We were non-stop from 10:00 am until 3:30 pm. We met a ton of kids (and parents) who praised the Humane Society for Campbell County's work. I put out all our information and some additional magazines about animals. Kids loved them -- some even took a couple. We also sponsored a "can" fundraising for Operation Rescue (for the animal victims of Hurricane Katrina). We were able to collect $30 and some change. I immediately dropped that off to the organization who was collecting cash and items at Cattle Annies on Saturday. I would like to thank our volunteers: Drs. John and Sue Earsing, Jeff Setzer, Tim Gibson, and Kristen Campell. A special thanks to the Bedford City Recreation & Parks department for donating the Tic-Tac-Toe and Ducks in the Tub games for the day.
