Based on the recommendations of two veterinarians, several of us concurred that the kindest thing to do for Scruffy was to gently euthanize him. The appointment was scheduled and our volunteer went to pick him up from his foster mom. As the volunteer was taking him, Scruffy wiggled out of her arms, held his injured leg high in the air, and circled back around the house to try to find his foster mom. He sat on the doorstep whining to be back inside with her. You can imagine how cruel our volunteer felt! How could she take him away, after seeing his determination to live? She couldn't do it…
It is very difficult to justify spending a large amount of money on one animal when that same money could be used to help many others. We thought to make some appeals to see if we could scrape together donations to cover some of the vetting expenses, and to our surprise we received over $1000 in to be used toward the treatment of his many medical issues.
Scruffy story is a happy ending. With a full coat of luscious hair, he has gone to live with his foster-to-adopt family. The breaks in Scruffy's leg have healed well, and all that we anticipate him needing is having the ball of his femur removed and a new ball created from muscle.
